QSSR on PS5: AI upscaling lands on the standard console in Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei

QSSR on the standard PS5 is live. On October 1, 2026, Sony Interactive Entertainment announced Quick Spectral Super Resolution, an AI upscaler built for the base console, which lacks the PS5 Pro’s dedicated machine-learning silicon. It answers a request players and developers have made since PSSR launched on Pro.

What happened?

Daniel Craig, principal graphics engineer at SIE, detailed the technology on the PlayStation Blog. QSSR is a performance tier of AI upscaling and an evolution of PSSR on PS5 Pro. It comes from Project Amethyst, Sony and AMD’s AI graphics collaboration, and rests on a streamlined neural network and a hand-tuned implementation for PS5 hardware.

The first games are Insomniac’s Marvel’s Wolverine and Sucker Punch’s Ghost of Yōtei. Both received a patch that adds QSSR as an extra graphics option on PS5. The library will be offered broadly to PlayStation developers.

Why it matters

Until now, PSSR analyzed frames pixel by pixel and reconstructed the image with more detail and stability than older TAA or FSR methods, but the compute cost kept it on Pro. Pro has about 300 TOPS of dedicated hardware and uses INT8 instructions. The base PS5 does not. QSSR relies primarily on FP16 math, the 16-bit floating-point format the console already runs well.

Digital Foundry’s October 1 hands-on notes that the gap versus PSSR remains large: Pro still has more headroom for output and base resolution. TechSpot reports that early tests show QSSR does not match PSSR, DLSS, or FSR 4, but it beats TAA and FSR 3 in sharpness. In one cited case, reconstruction rises from about 936p to 1440p, with a performance cost close to FSR 3.1 in Ghost of Yōtei.

What changes in practice?

  • Owners of the standard PS5 can enable QSSR in the two already updated games without buying a Pro.
  • Insomniac’s Mike Fitzgerald said the feature adds clarity in Madripoor and Shinjuku and a taste of the Pro experience.
  • Sucker Punch’s Jasmin Patry highlighted temporal stability the base PS5 did not have until now.
  • Craig said QSSR is fundamentally a drop-in replacement for titles that already support PSSR, after a few days of tuning. That does not guarantee a patch for the whole catalog: each studio decides.

PSSR remains the gold standard on Pro, aimed at reconstructed 4K. QSSR is the middle step for the 2020 console. Sources: PlayStation Blog, Digital Foundry, and The Verge.
