QSSR on the base PS5 arrives Thursday, October 1, 2026. Sony announced Quick Spectral Super Resolution, an AI upscaling library that until now was limited to PS5 Pro as PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR).
The first games are Marvel’s Wolverine, from Insomniac Games, and Ghost of Yōtei, from Sucker Punch. Both are patched today, with the feature as an extra graphics option on the base console. Daniel Craig, principal graphics engineer at Sony Interactive Entertainment, wrote the PlayStation Blog post.
What happened?
PSSR analyzes frames pixel by pixel and uses a neural network to rebuild detail with more stability than a conventional upscaler. Sony had said the compute cost made that experience impossible on the original console. QSSR is the lighter performance tier, born from Project Amethyst, the graphics and AI collaboration between Sony and AMD.
The company describes a leaner neural network and a hand-tuned implementation for PS5 hardware. PSSR remains the reference on PS5 Pro. On the standard model, the promise is a visible gain in detail and temporal stability, not full parity with the more expensive console.
What changes in practice
Mike Fitzgerald, head of technology at Insomniac, said QSSR adds pixel-level clarity and stability in dense areas of Marvel’s Wolverine, such as Madripoor and Shinjuku. Jasmin Patry, lead rendering engineer at Sucker Punch, said it resolves fine character and environment detail in Ghost of Yōtei with temporal stability the base PS5 had not offered.
Digital Foundry, after early access and a briefing with Sony graphics R&D, described better stability, detail and sub-pixel integrity, with fewer artifacts in moving foliage. The gap with PS5 Pro remains large: Pro has about 300 TOPS of dedicated hardware and uses INT8, while QSSR on the standard PS5 relies mainly on FP16 math.
In Digital Foundry’s cited Wolverine tests, QSSR added about 1.5 to 1.8 milliseconds versus Insomniac’s previous upscaler when reconstructing 864p to 1440p. Sony said games already on PSSR should need relatively little work to add QSSR, although texture-streaming retunes may take several days.
Why it matters
Sony will offer the library broadly to PlayStation developers. Launch-PS5 owners get an official AI upscaling path without buying a Pro. There is no further game list beyond today’s two patches. The official source is the PlayStation Blog.
