Microsoft has confirmed that Advanced Shader Delivery will leave its Radeon-only stage and, later this month, cover every GeForce RTX, the RTX Spark platform and a short list of Intel GPUs. The note is on the DirectX blog, written by program manager Wendy Ho.
The service ships precompiled shaders with the game download. The aim is to shorten the first-launch wait and cut stutter tied to runtime compilation, one of the most persistent DirectX 12 PC gaming problems.
What works now and what is still coming
Microsoft says first-launch compilation drops to a few seconds, against several minutes on a typical PC without the feature, and estimates a reduction of about 95%. The first game to use Advanced Shader Delivery across the wider ecosystem is Gears of War: E-Day, from The Coalition. Full support described in the post currently covers Radeon RDNA 1 through RDNA 4 with Adrenalin 26.6.1 or newer, and Snapdragon X2 with driver 2026.08.3 or newer.
The expansion planned for later this month includes:
- Nvidia: all RTX GPUs and RTX Spark;
- Intel: Arc B570, Arc B580, Core Ultra Series 2 and Core Ultra Series 3.
The system requirement is Windows 11 24H2 or newer. Microsoft has not yet published a minimum driver version for Intel and Nvidia in this stage. The next title named is Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, dated October 23.
It is not automatic in every game
The feature needs studio implementation. Microsoft asks E-Day players to install the Xbox PC app before downloading, because that is how the precompiled shaders are delivered. That is not the same as saying Steam already has its own independent version of the technology.
It is also distinct from Nvidia Auto Shader Compilation, which rebuilds DirectX 12 shaders after a driver update. Advanced Shader Delivery distributes GPU-specific packages with the game. Digital Foundry treated the expansion as significant because E-Day shipped with one of the longest initial shader compiles the team had seen, and only Radeon owners currently get the shortcut.
