Krafton cancels PUBG Black Budget after two closed alphas

PUBG Black Budget is canceled. PUBG Studios announced on Thursday, October 1, 2026, the end of development on the extraction shooter based on the PUBG IP, after two closed alpha tests and with no official release date.

What happened?

The studio posted a development update and said that, after reviewing the project's status and future direction, it concluded the current path would make it difficult to deliver an experience players could enjoy for a long time. Testing ended with the project.

Black Budget was a first-person tactical extraction shooter: drop in, collect the objective, get out alive. Korean and Japanese reports describe the island of Coli as about 2.5 km on a side, with three-player teams and up to 45 players per session, set around a classified research site locked in a time loop.

There were two closed alphas. The first ran in December 2025, with windows between December 12 and 21 for Steam users in North America, Europe and Asia. The second ran from June 26 to 29, 2026. After the first test, the studio had already cited muddy combat readability, weak situational clarity, fatigue across repeated runs, plus crashes and unauthorized programs.

Why it matters

The cancellation stops Krafton's attempt to take the PUBG IP into the extraction-shooter genre, a space that grew with games such as Escape from Tarkov. Aju Press notes the project already appeared in the company's Q3 2022 earnings materials, which puts the attempt near four years.

Creative direction sat with Paweł Smolewski at PUBG Studios Amsterdam, a name tied to early PUBG ballistics work and to Thunder Tier One, a tactical shooter Krafton brought in during 2020. The update does not detail what happens to the team.

What changes in practice?

There is no build to buy, no wishlist to fulfill and no date to move. Players who joined the alphas will not see the game proceed to launch. Krafton says learnings from the tests will feed later projects and that the decision follows the principle of putting player experience at the center.
