Gears of War E-Day launches without meat shields and chainsaw duels

Gears of War E-Day reaches early access without two signature moves: using a downed enemy as a meat shield and locking into a chainsaw duel between two Lancers. The Coalition explained, in a developer note cited by IGN, that Gears of War E-Day was built from scratch and that not every legacy feature fit into launch.

What happened to Gears of War E-Day?

The studio wrote that it started Gears of War E-Day with an empty hard drive, building the gameplay sandbox from scratch so campaign, PVE and PVP would share one system. That new base allowed changes to cover, combat and enemies. The trade-off was leaving some older features out on day one.

Besides meat shields and chainsaw duels, private lobbies and leaderboards are also missing from Gears of War E-Day for now. The Coalition said it is working to deliver those items after launch or in the next title. There is no confirmed date for the return of the mechanics.

What changes in practice

IGN reports that the first season of Gears of War E-Day starts with today's early access and runs for eight weeks, until December 1. It includes launch maps, modes and cosmetics, plus three seasonal events: Halloween, 20 Years of Gears and Thanksgibbing. Ranked mode arrives later, on October 13.

The Gnasher shotgun also changes in Gears of War E-Day. In earlier games, a hip fire went in the direction the character was facing. Now the system blends camera aim and muzzle position to give more control over last-second blasts.

Why it matters

Meat shields and chainsaw duels have been visual shorthand for the franchise since the first Gears of War in 2006. Leaving them out of the Gears of War E-Day launch package changes how multiplayer reads, even with the campaign set at the start of the war against the Locust. The full game is set for October 6 on Xbox Series and PC, with Game Pass access; early access begins today.
