What happened?
TechCrunch, The Verge, Android Authority and Wired described Call for Me as an experiment on the Pixel 11 series, including Pro, Pro XL and Pro Fold according to 9to5Google. Instead of dialing, you ask in the Gemini app or with @Call for me for a reservation, a stock check, a reschedule or an item on hold.
Gemini introduces itself as an AI calling on your behalf. It uses Direct My Call for menus and Hold for Me for queues. There is a live transcript and you can take over at any time. The call leaves from the phone itself.
Why it matters
Call for Me revives the logic of the old Google Duplex with current language models. Hold for Me and Direct My Call still require you to start the call. Here the agent runs almost the full loop. Google and rivals such as Meta are racing agents that act in the real world, not only in chat.
What changes in practice
The gate is narrow: 18+, US, US SIM, Pixel 11, paid Gemini plan, updated Gemini app, Phone by Google beta and English. Reports say the line is monitored and recorded. There is no date for broader Android or for Brazil.
