Hideaki Anno and Yutaka Izubuchi direct the Yamato Root 2199 film

The film Yamato Root 2199 (Uchuu Senkan Yamato √2199) was announced on October 6, 2026, exactly on the 52nd anniversary of the TV series premiere. Hideaki Anno and Yutaka Izubuchi are directing the feature, produced jointly by Production I.G and Studio Khara.

What happened?

The official account and the site yamato-r2199.jp confirmed the feature on the same calendar day that the first episode of Uchuu Senkan Yamato aired in 1974. The √ symbol is read as "root," and the official account also uses the form roots2199. A release date has not been announced.

Production credits list the original work by Yoshinobu Nishizaki. Anno is credited with planning, executive production, direction and design. Mitsuhisa Ishikawa, founder of Production I.G, shares planning. Izubuchi is co-director and also handles design. Animation is the first co-production between Production I.G and Studio Khara. The production company is Shin Office Academy.

The teaser shows Yamato leaving a devastated Earth for space. In a comment published by the project, Anno says he wants to keep making Yamato not only to fulfill a childhood dream, but to put prayers and wishes for the next generation, and for his own, into the film. According to Anime News Network, he had already said after the 50th-anniversary screening in October 2024 that Khara was preparing a Yamato project with new footage.

Why it matters

Yamato is one of the pillars of Japanese science fiction. The 26-episode series by Leiji Matsumoto and Yoshinobu Nishizaki became a phenomenon and opened the way for the space anime that followed. Anno, director of Neon Genesis Evangelion and Shin Godzilla, often cites the series as the encounter that changed his life in his second year of junior high.

Izubuchi also comes from inside the franchise: he directed Space Battleship Yamato 2199, the 2012 remake produced by Xebec, and is known for mecha design on Patlabor and RahXephon. Pairing the Evangelion studio with the studio behind Ghost in the Shell and Haikyu!! is a sign that this is not a short commemorative piece.

What changes in practice

There is still no long trailer, voice cast or release window. What exists is the teaser, the staff list and the official site. The franchise continues in parallel with Star Blazers: Yamato 3199, so this feature is a separate project tied to the Root 2199 name, not a chapter of the series currently screening.
