Magic Knight Rayearth returns to TV on October 7, 31 years later

The new TV series of Magic Knight Rayearth premieres on October 7, 2026 on TV Asahi, about 31 years after the original anime. The main cast presented Magic Knight Rayearth at a preview on October 3 in Tokyo.

What happened?

CLAMP's manga ran in Kodansha's Nakayoshi from 1993 to 1995. The TMS TV series aired from 1994 to 1995. An OVA followed in 1997. The new version of Magic Knight Rayearth is the first new production in about 29 years and the first television series in about 31 years, according to MANTANWEB's report on the preview at TOHO Cinemas Roppongi Hills.

The premiere is in TV Asahi's IMAnimation W block, at 11:45 p.m. on Wednesdays in Japan, running for two consecutive cours. Some regions are outside the network. The official site is rayearth-anime.com.

Ayane Sakura voices Hikaru Shidou, Rumi Okubo voices Umi Ryuuzaki and Rie Takahashi voices Fuu Hououji. Saori Hayami is Princess Emeraude and Yuki Ono is Zagato. Anime News Network lists Yui Miura as series director, in his first time in the role, with production by E&H. The opening is "Otome no Tsurugi" by Toaka, and the ending is "Hoshiakari" by Yurina Kawaguchi.

Why it matters

Magic Knight Rayearth mixes magical girl and mecha: three schoolgirls are summoned to Cephiro to save Princess Emeraude and pilot the mashin, machine gods. The official account posted on October 3 the visual of Windam, Fuu's wind mashin. It is one of CLAMP's founding works outside Cardcaptor Sakura and xxxHOLiC.

At the preview, Sakura said the cast and staff approached the production with care, thinking about what it means to redraw the work in the Reiwa era. Okubo, who watched the 1990s version, said the new look differs from both the manga and the Heisei anime, and that this was one possible form of the story. Ono joked that the thing to watch on Zagato, for now, is the width of his shoulders.

Viewers who grew up with the TMS version meet a new cast and a look that Okubo herself described as distinct from the old show. Magic Knight Rayearth is not a one-off special: two cours give room for the trip to Cephiro and the mashin arc without compressing everything into a film.

What changes in practice

Anyone following Magic Knight Rayearth in Japan already has a slot: Wednesdays at 11:45 p.m., from October 7. MANTANWEB also noted reprints of the CLAMP premium collection and the original art book, plus a manga reprint in the November Nakayoshi, which reached stores on October 2. An international streaming window has not been confirmed in the sources used here.
