Codex Game Studio Chromatic: OpenAI and ModRetro make Game Boy-style games

The Codex Game Studio Chromatic plugin was announced at OpenAI DevDay 2026 on September 29. OpenAI and ModRetro want you to describe a game in natural language and run it on a Game Boy Color-style handheld.

What happened?

Chromatic is a 160×144 metal handheld that plays original Game Boy and Game Boy Color carts plus new ModRetro titles. Sam Altman held up a working unit on stage.

Game Studio lets Codex generate the program from text. There is a desktop emulator, streaming to the real device, and writes to dedicated cartridges. ModRetro published a DevDay quickstart.

Why it matters

A frontier coding agent now sits on hardware with hard CPU, memory and palette limits. That reduces invented 3D engines and pushes a playable pixel prototype.

What changes in practice?

With Codex and the plugin you describe a loop, iterate in the emulator and burn the result. It is not a shortcut to a commercial Zelda: the ceiling is Game Boy Color.
