Phantom Liberty's Chimera tank took two years and became one of CDPR's costliest art assets

The Chimera tank fight in Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty took about two years of iteration and was described by CD Projekt Red as one of the most expensive art assets the studio has ever built.

What happened

On the official AnsweRED podcast, game director Gabe Amatangelo, creative director Igor Sarzyński and art director Paweł Mielniczuk discussed the sequence, as reported by Eurogamer and PC Gamer.

Amatangelo called the Chimera tank a nexus of gameplay, narrative, art and worldbuilding. The team swapped military-weapon references because they wanted the vehicle to terrify players the moment it rose.

Four versions

Mielniczuk said the fight took two years of going over it again and again. The tank went through about four redesigns, with equipment and weapons swapped. Sarzyński called it one of the most expensive art assets he can remember.

The encounter closes Phantom Liberty's opening act. CDPR did not publish a dollar figure; it confirmed the time and the complexity.
