Yuji Horii uses AI to release mystery game in about 30 minutes

Yuji Horii, the creator of the Dragon Quest series, used AI to release a new mystery game called Interrogation Room Komiya (取調室の小宮). According to the designer himself, the title was produced with the help of generative AI in about 30 minutes and posted on X on October 11, 2026.

Horii, 72, wrote: “Long ago, when I made ‘The Portopia Serial Murder Case’ on a PC, I came up with the story myself, drew the pictures myself, did the programming myself, and created the game all by myself. And now, by using AI, even if I can’t draw pictures or program, I can just give instructions to the AI and create a decent game all by myself. It’s truly astonishing. By the way, the production time for the game below was just about 30 minutes.”

What the game is

The title is an interrogation adventure playable in the browser, hosted as an Artifact on Claude.ai. The player takes the role of a police officer interrogating Komiya, a 72-year-old former locksmith suspected of a pawnshop safe robbery. The goal is to identify contradictions in the suspect’s statements and confront them with evidence.

The game includes meters for “agitation” (dōyō) and “resistance” (hanpatsu). If resistance reaches 100, the suspect falls silent. There is a limit on moves or time, and the final rating depends on how many lies the player can expose.

Why it matters

Horii is a central figure in the history of Japanese RPGs. His experiment with AI shows how tools like Claude allow experienced designers to prototype ideas quickly without needing art or programming teams for a small project. At the same time, the announcement sparked discussions on X about the use of generative AI in game creation, with some fans expressing concerns about ethics and model training.

This connects to a broader moment in which studios and creators are experimenting with AI at different levels — from operational support to content generation — while the debate about the role of technology in the creative process continues.
