Crunchyroll confirmed this Thursday (10) that the anime film Witch on the Holy Night — Mahoutsukai no Yoru — will receive a theatrical release outside of Japan. The ufotable animation, based on the visual novel by Kinoko Nasu and TYPE-MOON, hits Japanese cinemas on November 20, 2026, and arrives in Brazil on January 28, 2027.
What happened?
Crunchyroll announced the theatrical acquisition of Witch on the Holy Night alongside an international release schedule. In the United States and Canada, the premiere is set for January 29, 2027. The January 28 wave includes Mexico, Brazil, Chile, Central America, Ecuador, Colombia, Bolivia, Peru, as well as Italy, the Netherlands, Australia, and New Zealand, among others. Distribution will be handled by Crunchyroll and Sony Pictures Entertainment. The North American market will feature both subtitled and English-dubbed versions, though the company has not yet detailed the format for Brazilian screenings.
The news was originally published on Crunchyroll News and picked up by Deadline, Animation Magazine, and Anime News Network.
What is the movie about?
The story of Witch on the Holy Night takes place in the late 1980s. Aoko Aozaki appears to be an ordinary student, but she is a mage-in-training sharing a hilltop mansion with Alice Kuonji. Their quiet, secluded routine is disrupted when young Sōjūrō Shizuki arrives in town. The film explores the beginning of Aoko's journey in the exact same universe that later connects to Tsukihime and Fate.
The voice cast features the return of Haruka Tomatsu as Aoko, Kana Hanazawa as Alice, and Yūsuke Kobayashi as Sōjūrō — reprising their roles from the 2022 remastered video game version.
Why does this matter?
TYPE-MOON and ufotable previously collaborated on Kara no Kyoukai and the Fate/stay night [Heaven's Feel] theatrical trilogy. This time, the studio behind Demon Slayer is adapting a visual novel that is less mainstream yet central to fans of the Nasuverse. Bringing Witch on the Holy Night straight to theaters in Brazil, rather than dropping it directly on streaming services months later, indicates that Crunchyroll views the title as a major event — following the model of recent Demon Slayer theatrical rollouts.
For Brazilian anime fans, the January 2027 window positions the film right at the start of the year and close to other Northern Hemisphere winter releases. For anyone following the Fate series on Crunchyroll, this essentially serves as a theatrical prequel from the same creative house.
What hasn't been confirmed yet
The Brazilian date represents the theatrical release window announced by Crunchyroll rather than a finalized cinema schedule. There is currently no list of specific theaters, ticket pricing, or confirmation of a Portuguese dub. A streaming release date has also not been announced.
In Japan, the original visual novel launched in 2012 and received a voiced remaster in 2022 for the Nintendo Switch, PS4, and later Steam. The Witch on the Holy Night movie premieres there on November 20, 2026.
