The Star Fox Switch 2 remake gets its free Battle Mode update on Tuesday, September 29, 2026 — September 30 in some regions — as Nintendo announced in the September 9 Direct and on the official store page.
What happened?
Online Battle Mode already supported 4v4 on Corneria, Sector Y and Fichina. The patch adds Katina, Sector X and Venom. On Katina teams fight over a powerful laser. In Sector X they smash asteroids while dodging energy waves. On Venom they scan data modules and escape before a surge.
The same update unlocks local split-screen Battle Mode for up to four players on one Nintendo Switch 2. You can fight on the couch or form a four-player team on a single console and jump into an online match. A download is required; online play still needs Nintendo Switch Online.
Why it matters
The cinematic remake of Star Fox 64 launched June 25, 2026 as a Switch 2 exclusive, with full voice acting, an orchestral score and a visual overhaul. Local multiplayer was the most requested missing piece. Nintendo is shipping it as a free official expansion, not paid DLC.
Star Fox Switch 2 also keeps co-op campaign play, GameShare, first-person cockpit view, Joy-Con 2 mouse controls and a free demo covering the tutorial plus the Meteo stage.
