Shopify opens catalog of over 1 billion products to personal AI agents

Shopify has opened its catalog of more than one billion products to personal AI agents. Buyers can now configure any compatible agent to search items, build carts and complete checkouts using Shop Pay, without relying on exclusive partnerships.

The announcement, made on October 13, 2026, expands the company's agentic commerce initiative. In September, Shopify had already enabled Meta's Muse agent to buy on behalf of users. This time the door opens to any agent via Shop MCP and skills available at shop.md and shop.dev.

How it works

Users connect the agent to their Shop account, which consolidates orders, tracking and preferences. The agent can search the catalog (including products from non-Shopify stores), use purchase history to suggest sizes and preferences, build carts and prepare checkouts. Payment happens via Shop Pay inside the conversation, and orders return to the Shop app. Shopify positions the tool as a “personal shopper” where the human sets rules, such as budget limits or preference for fast shipping. Each purchase still requires buyer approval.

Ben Sehl, product director at Shopify, highlighted on X that the flow is now seamless for both buyers and developers: one skill turns any agent into a personal shopper personalized through the Shop account.

Agentic commerce context

E-commerce has become one of the main battlegrounds of the agent era. Google, Amazon and other companies are investing in tools whose end goal is the agent buying on behalf of the human. Amazon has been blocking agents from companies such as Perplexity and even Meta's Muse, while Shopify is taking the opposite strategy of expanding access.

The move reduces the friction of leaving the conversation to finish the purchase on the store's website, which often causes abandonment. With Shop MCP, developers gain access to 17 tools covering search, authentication, cart, checkout and tracking.

So far, human approval remains mandatory for each transaction, although the company mentions the future possibility of spending limits that authorize automatic purchases within rules defined by the user.
