QSSR reaches the base PS5. Sony announced Quick Spectral Super Resolution, a lighter version of the PS5 Pro's PSSR, already available by patch in Marvel's Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei.
What happened?
On October 1, 2026, the PlayStation Blog said QSSR arrives as a new performance tier of AI upscaling. It comes from Project Amethyst, Sony's graphics collaboration with AMD, with a leaner neural network and a hand-tuned implementation for standard PS5 hardware. Sony still calls PSSR the gold standard on PS5 Pro.
The first two games were patched the same day. The library is open to other PlayStation developers. Each game must be updated; it is not a system-wide switch.
Why it matters
With QSSR, neural upscaling is no longer exclusive to PS5 Pro. Mike Fitzgerald of Insomniac said it adds clarity and stability in Madripoor and Shinjuku. Jasmin Patry of Sucker Punch called it a step toward PSSR quality, not a replacement. Digital Foundry saw a clear gain in Wolverine and a smaller one in Ghost of Yōtei. Pro PSSR costs about 2 ms to 4K; QSSR has to fit a smaller budget.
What changes in practice?
Base PS5 owners can enable QSSR in the two updated games. New games join only when a studio integrates the library. Sony has not announced a further list.
