Sony Interactive Entertainment has revealed the brand-new official PlayStation 5 headphone lineup: the PlayStation Pulse Wireless Headset and the premium Pulse Edge Wireless Headset. The announcement dropped on the PlayStation Blog and the brand's Japanese blog, with both devices set to debut at the PlayStation booth during Tokyo Game Show 2026 starting this Thursday (17).

What happened?
These new headsets succeed the previous generation that included the 2024 Pulse Elite. Both models utilize magnetic planar drivers inspired by professional studio equipment. In plain terms: instead of the traditional cone found in standard headphones, a planar driver vibrates a thin, flat membrane. Sony states this improves sound separation, making it easier to pinpoint footsteps, reloads, and other directional cues in competitive games.
The drivers in this generation are larger than those in the Pulse Elite. The standard PlayStation Pulse features four magnets per driver, while the Pulse Edge packs eight—double the amount. The promise is deeper bass without sacrificing crisp, clear details.
How do the two models differ?
Both headsets include PlayStation Link (USB-C adapter included), lossless audio, low latency, seamless switching between PS5, PlayStation Portal, PC, and Mac, and simultaneous Bluetooth connectivity. The microphones feature AI noise rejection to filter out background hums. The earcups swivel and fold flat for easy storage. Color options: White and Midnight Black.
The Pulse Edge sits at the top of the lineup. In addition to the eight magnets, it features Active Noise Cancellation (ANC), a detachable boom mic (along with a hidden mic when the boom is removed), physical volume and game/chat balance controls on the PS5, an audio/mic jack, and a hard carrying case.
The standard PlayStation Pulse falls in the middle: an integrated mic with AI noise rejection, volume controls, but no ANC and no carrying case.
Release window and what is missing
The PlayStation Pulse Wireless Headset is slated to launch in selected markets for the 2026 holiday season, while the Pulse Edge follows in early 2027. Pricing, exact release dates, and pre-order info have not yet been disclosed. In Japan, Sony confirmed both devices will be on display at TGS 2026.
Why it matters
The PlayStation Pulse line has become the official audio standard for the PS5. Gamers using the Portal, playing on PC with the same dongle, or wanting a headset that also connects to their phone via Bluetooth are getting a new generation with larger drivers and AI mics. Without pricing details yet, it is too early to tell whether the Edge justifies the price jump over the standard Pulse or the current Elite model.
