Google published an admin support page that makes the roadmap explicit: Googlebook OS takes over from ChromeOS, which will receive updates and security patches only through mid-2034.
What happened?
The page What the Googlebook announcement means for your ChromeOS devices says current Chromebooks keep their Auto Update Policy lifetime. New Chromebooks remain on sale for schools and enterprises. “Many of our newest Chromebook devices will be eligible to transition over to Googlebook OS.” Model lists and migration steps “will be shared soon.”
Googlebook OS combines the ChromeOS foundation with the Android stack and powers Googlebooks built around Gemini. New devices get 10 years of updates from the processor, Pixel-style. Enterprise and education management for Googlebook OS starts rolling out in the second half of 2027.
Why it matters
Schools buy Chromebooks for a decade of patches. A device bought today may hit the mid-2034 ChromeOS cutoff before that decade ends. Google pledges a move to Googlebook OS, with “many devices” on a direct path, but has not named models or the price of the new management license.
In practice
Older Chromebooks do not need a forced upgrade now. Buyers in 2026 should ask whether a model is on the Googlebook OS list. Consumer Googlebooks are on preorder, with a reported Oct. 4, 2026 launch. Existing ChromeOS Enterprise/Education licenses stay on current hardware.
