Gears of War: E-Day launches this Tuesday, October 6, 2026, on Xbox Series X|S and PC. The Coalition's prequel, published by Xbox Game Studios, is on Game Pass on day one and carries the Xbox Play Anywhere label: buy it once and play on console and Windows.
What happened?
The official Xbox page confirms the October 6, 2026 date and describes Gears of War: E-Day as the origin of Emergence Day, fourteen years before the first Gears of War. Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago face the Locust Horde as it erupts from underground. The title is rated Mature and has no announced PlayStation version.
On Metacritic, the Xbox Series X edition of Gears of War: E-Day shows a Metascore of 87, in the Generally Favorable band, based on 41 critic reviews. Of those, 38 are positive (93%) and 3 are mixed (7%), with no negative review listed on the page. The early user score sat at 8.5 from only four ratings. The page also shows an aggregate of 83 on another platform, based on 33 reviews, which indicates the PC cut does not match the console sample exactly.
Why it matters
Gears of War: E-Day is Xbox's big console exclusive on October 6, the same day Star Wars: Galactic Racer arrives on multiple platforms. For the series, the number matters because Gears of War 4 and Gears 5 landed at 84 on Metacritic, below the first three games. An 87 does not recover the original's 94, but it puts the prequel ahead of The Coalition's more recent entries.
Reviews are not unanimous. TheXboxHub scored it 100 and called the package a triumph, with a campaign, multiplayer, and large maps. Destructoid, at 90, highlighted a long campaign, an expanded Horde mode, and classic multiplayer. GameOver.gr, at 95, cited a dedicated jump button and action set pieces. Game Rant, also at 90, praised the volume of modes but noted narrative limits. At the other end, Gamekult scored it 50 and described the game as bloated and stuck on nostalgia.
What changes in practice?
Anyone with Game Pass on console or PC can open Gears of War: E-Day on launch day without a separate purchase. Pre-orders, according to the Xbox store, unlock Dom's Exfil skin and a weapon skin set. The lack of a PlayStation release keeps the game an Xbox console exclusive, unlike several recent studio launches that reached other platforms.
For anyone comparing scores, the firmest snapshot right now is Xbox Series X: 87, 41 reviews, zero negatives. The score can still move as more outlets publish reviews.
