Final Fantasy VII Revelation Gets Release Date and Epic Trilogy Finale

Square Enix has finally revealed how one of gaming's most beloved stories ends. During this week's State of Play (PlayStation's news broadcast), the company unveiled Final Fantasy VII Revelation, the final chapter of the trilogy rebuilding the 1997 classic from the ground up, with a release date set for April 8, 2027.

What happened?

At the event, Square Enix showcased a new gameplay sequence and confirmed Revelation's release date for PS5, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC (Steam, Epic Games Store, and Microsoft Store). The showcase featured travel sequences aboard the Highwind airship, visits to locations absent from the previous game like Wutai and Rocket Town, and a glimpse of the "FITS system," a mechanic allowing characters to equip special items to gain classic series class abilities like Black Mage or Monk.

What does this mean?

For the uninitiated, Final Fantasy VII is an RPG (role-playing game featuring a long story and turn-based or real-time battles) originally released in 1997 and considered one of the most influential in video game history. Rather than simply updating the old game's graphics, Square Enix decided to recreate the entire adventure split into three large, standalone titles: Remake (2020), Rebirth (2024), and now Revelation (2027), each covering a portion of the original journey with expanded stories and modern visuals.

Revelation picks up right where Rebirth left off: the AVALANCHE resistance group, led by mercenary Cloud Strife, heads toward the Northern Crater to stop the villain Sephiroth from summoning a meteor capable of destroying the planet, all while battling the Shinra Corporation and giant monsters known as "Weapons."

Why does it matter?

Revelation wraps up a project Square Enix has been building since 2020, and arrives marking a major milestone in reach: it will be the first major mainline Final Fantasy to launch simultaneously on an Xbox console since 2016, and the first on a Nintendo console since the Super Nintendo era in 1994. This means that for the first time in many years, virtually any player — whether on PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch 2, or PC — can experience the story's conclusion at the same time.

In practice

Alongside free-roaming open-world exploration — including flying the Highwind and submarine underwater travel — the game is set to feature revamped versions of fan-favorite minigames, such as the Queen's Blood card game and the snowboarding segment. Cloud's English voice actor has publicly stated that the ending "will leave players in tears," raising expectations that Revelation will deliver an emotionally striking conclusion to a seven-year trilogy.

Context

The remake trilogy was born to expand a story that, in the original 1997 game, was told in a few dozen hours, transforming it into a massive multi-part experience featuring real-time combat, full voice acting, and fully 3D environments. With Revelation, Square Enix promises to close the circle opened over 25 years ago, uniting nostalgic veteran fans and a new generation introduced to the story solely through the recent titles.
