Final Fantasy 7 Revelation, the final chapter of the remake trilogy, will have a physical edition, but the disc does not hold the full game. Director Naoki Hamaguchi told Radio Times he used his position to argue for a boxed disc: the physical copy includes the opening, and the rest requires a download. The interview was reported by IGN and Insider Gaming on October 3, 2026.
What happened?
Hamaguchi said there is pressure for disc-less and digital-only editions. “I used my position to put forth an argument for the physical version as much as possible,” he said. He then acknowledged that part of the audience does not agree: “I hope you understand that I completely see where you’re coming from, and that I did my best.”
On PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X, the disc works as a key that contains the opening. The rest arrives after a download. In a September VGC interview, he estimated Final Fantasy 7 Revelation at about 200 GB and said the number was still being finalized.
Why it matters
The game closes the trilogy that began with Remake and continued with Rebirth. Square Enix set the launch for April 8, 2027, on PC, Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. An install around 200 GB changes planning for anyone with a tight SSD.
Hamaguchi described a near future in which a box might hold only a code on paper. Revelation sits in between: a disc exists, but it is not enough to play. SKU decisions, he said, sit with Square Enix.
What changes in practice
Anyone buying the box in 2027 needs a connection and free space in line with the roughly 200 GB estimate. The disc keeps the opening and serves as proof of a physical purchase, but it does not replace the digital install. The April 8, 2027 date does not change.
