The ChatGPT virtual try-on is now available at global scale. On October 1, 2026, OpenAI announced two shopping features: a Try On button to preview clothes and accessories on a user photo, and Favorites for saving products in the app Library. The ChatGPT virtual try-on uses the ChatGPT Images 2.5 model, which the company says produces more natural lighting, richer textures, follows editing instructions more reliably, and reduces generation latency.
What happened?
According to OpenAI's help center, updated in early October, the Try On button appears on clothing and accessory listings in ChatGPT shopping results. The flow is simple: pick the item, take or upload a selfie, and view the generated image. Users can also upload a photo of the piece, such as a website screenshot, and ask ChatGPT to show how it might look.
Reference photos are saved for later try-ons. They can be replaced or deleted in Settings, Personalization, Reference photos. Favorites stores products in the Library alongside try-on images.
OpenAI is explicit: a virtual try-on may not represent the product or the person's appearance exactly and does not guarantee fit or size. Shoppers should check measurements, product details, and the merchant's return policy before buying. TechCrunch and The Verge covered the launch; The Verge noted that Google already offered a similar try-on and pointed out that, in one of OpenAI's own examples, the model changed the person's hair without a clear request.
Why it matters
ChatGPT already surfaces products when a conversation suggests shopping intent and, for eligible merchants, offers Instant Checkout without leaving the chat. A visual preview pushes the assistant into the moment when someone decides whether a piece suits them, ground Google and Pinterest have occupied for longer. OpenAI says product results are selected by the model, are not ads, and are not influenced by partnerships; ads, when present, are separate.
For a geek audience, the technical point is Images 2.5: OpenAI presents the model as the base of the new shopping features, with more obedient editing and faster generation. In practice, an image generator stops being only an art tool and starts mediating a purchase decision.
What changes in practice?
- The Try On button appears on clothing and accessory listings in ChatGPT shopping results.
- A selfie or full-body photo works as a reusable reference.
- An item can be tested from a screenshot sent in chat.
- Favorites and try-on images live in the app Library.
- The generated image does not replace a size chart or a return policy.
