ChatGPT Images 2.6 generates native GIFs and speeds up image creation

ChatGPT Images 2.6 arrived on Wednesday, November 4, with native support for animated GIFs and faster image generation in ChatGPT, Codex and the API.

What changed in ChatGPT Images 2.6?

OpenAI launched ChatGPT Images 2.6, which allows creating GIFs from text prompts or uploaded photos. Users can adjust playback speed and edit individual frames directly in the chat. There are also reusable reference images to maintain consistency of characters, pets or products.

In the API, two new models are available: GPT-Image-2.6 Flare, which generates images in as little as six seconds at low quality, and GPT-Image-2.6 Sunburst, focused on higher quality and consistency in edits. Generation of ChatGPT Images 2.6 became about 50% faster compared to the previous version.

Availability and numbers

The feature is available globally across all ChatGPT and Codex plans, on web, desktop and mobile. OpenAI reports that users create more than 4 billion images per week on the platform and API, up from 3 billion reported in September.
