CESA: 85.8% of Japanese game developers use generative AI at work

Japan’s Computer Entertainment Supplier’s Association (CESA) said in the preview of its 2026 Game Industry Report that 85.8% of surveyed Japanese developers use generative AI at work. The figure comes from 1,349 valid responses collected between May and August 2026.

What the survey shows

Among users, 63% said they use the tools daily and 22.8% use them occasionally. Another 8.6% are still trialling them, 4.8% have never used them and 0.7% stopped after trying.

How studios say they use it

Reported uses include admin work, debugging and asset generation, with tools such as ChatGPT and Copilot. The most common governance step is human review.

Why it matters

An 85.8% adoption figure shifts the argument from whether generative AI belongs in the pipeline to who signs off the final asset. The full report is slated for early December.
