Brave has been sued for AI content scraping. The New York Times and a group of other American newspapers have sued Brave Software, the company behind the Brave browser, over alleged illegal scraping of copyrighted content. The lawsuits were filed on November 2, 2026, in Manhattan federal court.
According to the complaints, Brave built an index of more than 30 billion web pages and sells access to that material to AI companies, including Anthropic, Perplexity, Mistral, xAI and Cohere. The newspapers claim the company acts as a “supplier, dealer and distributor of stolen copyrighted content” and allows browser users to bypass paywalls.
What the complaints allege
The New York Times has previously sued OpenAI and Perplexity over similar issues. It is now targeting Brave as an intermediary that collects and redistributes the material. A complaint from the Daily News, Chicago Tribune and Orlando Sentinel describes Brave as an “agent” that sells scraped content. The Times says it sent cease-and-desist letters in August 2025 and April 2026 without effective response.
Graham James, a New York Times spokesperson, told The Verge: “While we believe in the ethical and responsible use and development of AI, Brave has flouted established copyright law and ignored repeated requests by The Times to stop its infringing conduct.”
Why it matters
The case expands the dispute between publishers and AI companies over the use of journalistic content to train models. Instead of suing only model developers, the newspapers are now targeting intermediaries that provide real-time data. Brave is known for its privacy-focused browser and ad blocking, but the complaints question its indexing and monetization practices involving third-party content.
As of now, Brave has not issued a detailed public response to the new lawsuits. The case could influence how browsers and search engines handle copyrighted content intended for AI systems.
