AMD World Labs is the deal announced Monday: AMD will acquire the San Francisco lab led by Fei-Fei Li for about $8.2 billion in stock. The transaction is expected to close by the end of 2026, subject to regulatory approvals.
What World Labs builds
The company develops spatial-intelligence models that generate, reconstruct and simulate interactive 3D environments from text, images and video. The aim is to train agents — robots, vehicles, tools — inside physics-aware digital worlds before they reach the real one. In earlier demos, the Marble model built 3D scenes from a few images.
World Labs raised about $1 billion earlier this year, with AMD among the investors. The firms already partnered on inference and training optimization.
Fei-Fei Li's role
After close, Li will join AMD as executive vice president and chief scientist, reporting to Lisa Su. The research team will keep focusing on models rather than folding immediately into chip manufacturing. Li framed the move as a way to scale breakthroughs beyond the lab.
Why it matters for hardware
AMD says understanding frontier workloads — 3D simulation, robotics, synthetic data — will shape chips, software and systems years ahead. It is AMD's second-largest purchase after Xilinx in 2022. World Labs is expected to stay operationally separate until close.
