AMD has signed a definitive agreement to acquire World Labs, the AI lab founded by Fei-Fei Li, in an all-stock deal valued at about $8.2 billion. Closing is expected by the end of 2026, subject to regulatory approvals.
What World Labs does
Based in San Francisco, World Labs builds spatial-intelligence models that generate, reconstruct and simulate interactive 3D environments from text, images and video. The bet is that general AI needs an understanding of physics and the real world—not only text and flat images—with uses in robotics, simulation and synthetic data for training agents.
The startup raised about $1 billion earlier this year, including a prior investment from AMD itself.
What changes at AMD
After close, Fei-Fei Li will join as executive vice president and chief scientist, reporting to Lisa Su. The team will keep focusing on model research. AMD says frontier workloads like World Labs' will help shape its chip, software and systems roadmap.
“Advancing the next generation of AI technology requires close collaboration across model research, systems and compute,” Li said. World Labs said co-founders Justin Johnson and Ben Mildenhall will continue leading the team with Li.
Why it matters
It is AMD's second-largest acquisition after Xilinx (~$50 billion in 2022). The deal positions AMD not only as a GPU vendor but as owner of world-model research—the kind of AI robotics and autonomous-vehicle companies want so agents can train in digital worlds before the physical one.
