What happened?
According to the official Bandai Namco announcement, Hour Zero is a short miniseries designed to introduce newcomers and veterans alike to the Ace Combat universe—known as Strangereal. The stellar cast features Josh Holloway (Lost, Yellowstone), Brandon Routh (Superman Returns), and Tamlyn Tomita (Cobra Kai).
The plot follows three strangers during the opening days of the Republic of Sotoa invasion against the Central Usean Federation. Holloway plays a pilot with nowhere to land, Routh portrays a medic who saved an enemy soldier, and Tomita is a TV anchor silenced for telling the truth. The narrative unfolds in reverse chronological order, tracing their ordinary family lives right up to the moment war erupts.
When and where to watch
The episodes run between 6 and 11 minutes long and will premiere on IGN's website and YouTube channel at 6:00 AM Pacific (9:00 PM Singapore time):
- September 15: Act 1
- September 17: Act 2
- September 23: Act 3
- September 29: Epilogue
The official teaser is currently live on YouTube. Ace Combat 8 grants early access for Deluxe Edition owners on September 29, followed by a worldwide launch on October 2 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam. IGN coverage confirms both the release schedule and platform-exclusive format.
Why it matters
Project Aces' aerial combat franchise has always blended arcade flight mechanics, soaring orchestral scores, and high-octane cinematic drama. Releasing a bite-sized live-action prequel exclusively on IGN is a brilliant way to establish Strangereal's complex geopolitical lore without forcing players to digest text-heavy manuals. It is also a razor-sharp marketing push: the final epilogue lands on the exact same day as the Ace Combat 8 Deluxe Edition early access.
What it doesn't mean
Hour Zero is not a full television series and will not replace the game's core campaign. It is simply a four-part short film meant to set the mood for the conflict. Its dramatic quality and faithfulness to the games' signature campy tone can only be truly judged starting September 15.
