Microsoft announced on Tuesday, October 13, 2026, the creation of Xbox Labs, a small internal group of game makers, engineers and scientists dedicated to turning emerging ideas into experiences accessible to players and developers.
The announcement was made by Xbox CEO Asha Sharma in a memo sent to the team and published on Xbox Wire. The group will be led by Scott Van Vliet, Xbox CTO.
What Xbox Labs will explore
Sharma highlighted recent experiments in which games have been rapidly decompiled and rebuilt to run on hardware they were never originally designed for. She cited Windows PC builds translated to Apple Silicon and ports to browsers via WebAssembly and WebGPU — technology that is already approaching 90% global browser support.
“These experiments challenge long-held assumptions about our industry: the tether between software and hardware, the boundary between creation and play, and how people discover and experience games,” Sharma wrote. She emphasized the possibilities of making great games easier to access, giving old games new life and allowing more players to become creators.
The memo also connects the work to AI agents. “Coding became the first major workload for agents because they can write, run, and test software. Games share many of those same properties,” Sharma stated, noting that people spend more than 72 billion hours a year playing Xbox games — roughly five times the estimated time spent writing code worldwide.
Xbox Labs will build in the open, learn from what people do and measure success by whether more people are playing and creating. Xbox priorities are not changing: the company remains committed to the 4Cs, to making great games, to its hardware and to being responsible stewards of IP and communities.
The announcement comes at a time when AI-assisted mods and ports — such as Halo running in a browser or game remixes — are gaining visibility. The group formalizes existing R&D initiatives, including ports to Apple Silicon and browser-based distribution.
