Microsoft opened Xbox Disc-to-Digital to every Xbox One and Xbox Series X owner. After weeks in the Insider program, Xbox Disc-to-Digital went live for everyone on September 29, 2026.
How Xbox Disc-to-Digital works
With a Microsoft account signed in, insert a supported disc. The console notifies you that a digital license has been claimed. You can use an Xbox One or a Series X even if the disc is current-gen.
To convert many titles in a row, turn off automatic disc playback under Settings. Then use the Menu button on the game tile to claim the license. A console restart often surfaces the prompt if it does not appear.
What the license covers
Xbox Disc-to-Digital covers most Xbox One and Series X discs, not original Xbox or Xbox 360. Ubisoft joined in September and SEGA on general launch day. Community trackers list roughly 1,400 to 1,600 confirmed games.
The license stays tied to the disc. Microsoft says it may later require proof of possession. Selling, losing or giving away the disc can limit digital access. Play Anywhere titles can then run on PC and, when supported, on Xbox Cloud Gaming.
Why Xbox Disc-to-Digital matters
The feature makes a physical library easier to live with without treating the disc as disposable. Microsoft already framed it as part of preservation work and next-generation planning at Gamescom.
