On October 7 VRChat published its current position on artificial intelligence and updated creator guidelines. The immediate change bans thumbnails that do not match the real world experience, whether or not they were generated with AI. Names, tags and descriptions must not mislead users.
The note follows calls from creators including B1G and Patroll. Part of the community began marking covers with a “NO AI” banner. AUTOMATON reports that an in-platform group tied to that movement had more than 6,000 members at the time of its coverage. VRChat said the feedback had arrived and that it does not yet have a closed answer.
The company splits use into two bands. Translation, grammar checks, coding help, personal tools and assist features in Unity or Blender are treated as acceptable. Generating entire worlds, assets or the Udon system remains under internal discussion. This announcement does not add a mandatory AI label or a filter to hide generated content: VRChat says the line between assistance and generation is hard to draw and that a label would mostly be used by people already acting in good faith.
What comes next
The company opened a feedback form for seven days from October 7 and plans to test discovery changes in the coming weeks to lower the visibility of mass-produced content and surface higher-quality worlds. An update on the plan is expected about six weeks later. VRChat remains free on Steam, Viveport, Meta Quest, Pico, iOS and Android.
