HLX Half-Life 3 returned to the spotlight after Valve composer Mike Morasky publicly mentioned the codename during a panel at GameSoundCon 2026. The remark came while discussing the company’s HDR audio systems in a session on open and flexible engines.
What happened with HLX Half-Life 3?
Morasky stated that Deadlock has its own version of HDR and that “HLX has its own version.” Shortly after, Valve sound designer David Feise reportedly muttered “nice work” sarcastically, according to attendees. The session video is available on Vimeo and was widely shared.
The HLX codename has appeared in Valve game code such as Counter-Strike 2, Dota 2, and Deadlock since 2024. Dataminers like Tyler McVicker associate HLX Half-Life 3 with a non-VR project in advanced development, possibly playable from start to finish.
Why HLX Half-Life 3 matters
Valve has never officially confirmed Half-Life 3. The last release was Half-Life: Alyx in 2020. This public mention by a current employee is the clearest yet and revives the more than 20-year wait for the continuation of Gordon Freeman’s story.
Reports from Ars Technica, VGC, TechSpot, and Eurogamer detailed the episode. So far, Valve has issued no official statement.
