Trails in the Sky 2nd Chapter Launches Today on PS5, Switch 2, Switch & PC

The remake of Trails in the Sky 2nd Chapter (known in Japan as Sora no Kiseki the 2nd) arrives this Thursday, September 17, 2026, for PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch, and PC via Steam. It is the direct sequel to the 1st Chapter remake released in 2025 by Nihon Falcom, launching on the exact same day Tokyo Game Show 2026 opens its doors at Makuhari Messe.

What happened?

Falcom and GungHo confirmed a simultaneous worldwide release. In the West, physical and digital editions are available on PS5, Switch 2, and Switch. In Japan, physical copies are available for PS5 and Switch 2. Those who pre-order in Japan (physical or digital, excluding Steam) receive a download code for the HD remaster of the original Trails in the Sky, featuring a high-speed mode and text log.

At TGS 2026, the game is featured in Konami's partner area with a playable demo, weapon replicas, and a live stream by the Falcom JDK band on launch day.

What is the game about?

The story picks up right after the end of the 1st Chapter: following the coup in Liberl, Joshua disappears on the eve of the Queen's Birthday Festival, leaving behind only his harmonica. Estelle Bright, now a senior bracer, sets out to find him and uncover the plots of the Ouroboros secret society. Players who completed the first remake can import their save data to earn starting items, including the classic "Classic Style SC" outfits for Estelle and Joshua.

How does it play?

The combat system blends two distinct layers. On the field, Quick Battle delivers real-time action. When battles demand more strategy, it shifts to turn-based Command Battle. A brand-new addition is the Brave Rush, which chains attacks seamlessly between characters. The orbment system (the crystals that unlock Arts and magic) has also been expanded with new crafts and S-Crafts.

Outside of the main story, players can enjoy fishing, poker, cooking, and Viewer Mode—a feature allowing you to pose and photograph the cast using unlocked backgrounds and costumes throughout the campaign. The demo, live since August 19, covers the prologue and Chapter 1 (roughly 10 hours of gameplay) with save data carrying over to the full game.

Why does it matter?

For longtime fans of the Trails saga, the Liberl arc is the foundational starting point for everything that followed. This remake is far more than a simple upscale: it is the definitive visual canon established by Falcom for Estelle and Joshua's journey, complete with full voice acting and systems optimized for modern hardware, including the Switch 2. Early reviews, such as Game Informer's 9.5/10, hail it as a masterclass that defines the series today.
