Team17 has announced The Escapists 3, the sequel to the prison-break simulator, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, Nintendo Switch 2 and PC via Steam. The game arrives in 2027 and was shown at the October Triple-i Initiative, about nine years after The Escapists 2 in 2017.
What changes
According to the Gematsu listing and Famitsu, the series drops pixel art for a 3D sandbox. The player is still an inmate: watch the guards' routine, take jobs, earn cash, swipe whatever is not nailed down and turn junk into an escape plan. Digging, climbing, disguises, fighting and improvising work solo or with friends. The pitch is the same: prison has rules, you have other plans, and you still need to make roll call.
Team17 lists more than 120 items and weapons to loot and craft, plus five prisons, each with its own routine, characters and secrets. After the guards, the game promises to show what waits beyond the walls. Everyday scenes, such as the cafeteria line, are also rendered in 3D.
Where and when
There is no locked day or month, only a 2027 window. Confirmed platforms are PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Switch 2 and Steam. The reveal came in the Triple-i Initiative trailer block. Price, voice acting and a pre-order window have not been announced.
Why it matters
The Escapists became a reference for creative escape games because of its humor and improvisation. The jump to 3D is the sequel's biggest risk: map reading and crafting may be less clear than in the top-down look. It also puts the series on Switch 2 and back on the radar after nearly a decade without a main game. Still unconfirmed: whether co-op is local, online or both, and whether 3D keeps the same route freedom as the pixel games.
