Sumikko Gurashi will get a fifth animated film in 2027, the year San-X’s brand turns 15. The announcement landed Wednesday on the official movie-series site. The working title is Eiga Sumikko Gurashi 5 (Kari).
Neko takes the lead
Each earlier film put a different core character front and center. This time it is shy cat Neko, the last of the original main cast. Creator Yuri Yokomizo drew a commemorative illustration: Penguin?, Tokage, Shirokuma and Tonkatsu hold numbers decorated with motifs from their films. Neko stands in front, blushing, nudged by friend Zassou, clutching a still-blank “5” — the story itself stays under wraps.
Sumikko Gurashi launched in 2012 as characters who prefer the corner of the room: cold-sensitive polar bear Shirokuma, unsure Penguin?, leftover pork cutlet Tonkatsu, shy Neko and Tokage, who hides being one of the last dinosaurs.
Second film returns
As the first 15th-anniversary event, 2021’s Eiga Sumikko Gurashi: Aoi Tsukiyo no Mahou no Ko plays in 82 Japanese theaters from October 31 to November 3, 2026, with a new postcard and a post-credits extra. The original run earned about 1.26 billion yen in Japan.
The 2019 first film sold 1.22 million tickets. The fourth, Sora no Ōkoku to Futari no Ko, opened in October 2025.
