State of Play: Final Fantasy VII Revelation Release Date, Wolverine Trailer & 15+ Games

Sony hosted another edition of the State of Play this Thursday (3), and this time the event did not disappoint those expecting major announcements for the PlayStation 5's upcoming months. In just over 30 minutes, the presentation showcased nearly 20 games, ranging from familiar blockbusters to entirely brand-new titles.

Final Fantasy VII Revelation Finally Gets a Release Date

The night's biggest highlight was Final Fantasy VII Revelation, the third and final chapter of the remake trilogy Square Enix has been building since 2020. The game had been announced previously, but it was only during this State of Play that the publisher revealed its release date: April 8, 2027, alongside an extensive gameplay overview.

Among the new features shown are the ability to explore the entire planet without the limitations seen in previous chapters, including a parachute system to jump from the Highwind airship, free control of any party member during battles, and the return of the Queen's Blood card minigame. Characters like Red XIII, Cid, and Vincent Valentine also had their gameplay detailed for the first time, and iconic areas from the original RPG, such as Rocket Town and Wutai, will feature fast travel between regions.

Wolverine Extends Its Claws Ahead of Launch

With less than two weeks until it hits stores, Marvel's Wolverine, the new project from Insomniac Games, received a trailer focusing on the character's movement and exploration abilities. The game launches on September 15 and promises a darker, more violent tone than the studio's Spider-Man titles.

Ghost of Yotei, Until Dawn 2, and More Announcements

Sucker Punch used the event to announce Ghost of Yotei: Complete Edition, arriving on October 1st with a hardcore survival mode and the ability to play as characters from Ghost of Tsushima. Meanwhile, Until Dawn 2 received a cinematic trailer emphasizing player choices, slated for release on January 28, 2027.

Other major announcements included the Monster Hunter Wilds: Ascendance expansion, the survival horror title Metro 2039 (set for a February 2027 release), the sequel Maneater 2 set in a water park, the mecha game Gundam Rogue Orbit, and new KONAMI titles featuring the unreleased Rev.NoiR and Rhapsody in Scarlet—the latter being an action game set in New York to a jazz soundtrack.

Racing fans were also catered to: Gran Turismo 7 received details on the Spec IV update, bringing new tracks, twelve additional cars, and a family mode, with the first wave of content landing on October 3.

Worth Noting: No GTA 6 at the Presentation

Despite some fan anticipation, GTA 6 did not appear with a trailer or gameplay announcements—the only mention of the title was a limited-edition DualSense controller with a game-inspired design, available now for pre-order.

With such a diverse batch of announcements, September's State of Play reinforces that the coming months will be action-packed for PlayStation 5 owners—and shows that Sony still has plenty of cards up its sleeve for early 2027.
