Sony adapts Mouthwashing for the big screen with Karyn Kusama directing

Sony Pictures has acquired the film rights to the psychological horror game Mouthwashing, developed by Wrong Organ and published by Critical Reflex. Karyn Kusama, known for Jennifer’s Body and The Invitation, will direct, while Matt Manfredi and Phil Hay write the screenplay.

What happened?

The announcement came on October 29, 2026, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter and Deadline. Scott Derrickson of The Black Phone and Sinister produces with C. Robert Cargill and Vince Cheng via Crooked Highway, which has a deal with Sony’s Screen Gems. Wrong Organ confirmed on X: “The rumors are true. A Mouthwashing movie adaption is currently in the works at Sony.”

The game follows five crew members of the cargo ship Tulpar, isolated after a crash, facing dwindling supplies, paranoia, and the consequences of past decisions. Released on PC in 2024, it scored 88 on Metacritic and sold nearly one million copies. On the same day as the film news, it launched on consoles (PS4, PS5, Xbox, Switch) and Game Pass.

Why it matters

Mouthwashing stood out for its low-poly look, nonlinear narrative, and themes of responsibility and denial. The adaptation brings together horror talent experienced in psychological tension at a time when Sony is betting on game IPs following the success of Resident Evil. The game generated tens of millions of views in YouTube and TikTok videos.
