SK Hynix launches HYAICO: US AI investment arm with up to $10 billion

SK Hynix has formalized the creation of HYAICO Corp., its United States-based artificial intelligence investment arm, with a planned commitment of up to $10 billion. The details emerged from filings with the US Securities and Exchange Commission, where SK Group Chairman Chey Tae-won is listed as board chairman.

What happened?

HYAICO was formed by restructuring SK Hynix’s existing US NAND subsidiary, previously known as Solidigm (SK hynix NAND Product Solutions Corp.). The NAND flash business was transferred to a new Solidigm Inc., while HYAICO takes on the role of investing in AI companies and infrastructure projects, including AI factories.

Song Hyun-jong, president of SK Hynix, will serve as HYAICO’s CEO. The board also includes former SK Hynix Vice Chairman Park Sung-wook, SK Hynix CEO Kwak Noh-jung, and SK Telecom CEO Jung Jae-hun. Funding will come through capital calls as opportunities arise, rather than an immediate $10 billion outlay.

Why does this matter?

As a global leader in HBM memory used in AI accelerators, SK Hynix is diversifying beyond memory chips and moving more directly into the US AI ecosystem. The vehicle allows the SK Group to capture synergies across affiliates and invest in software technologies and infrastructure that improve AI system performance.

An early step has already been taken: HYAICO’s subsidiary SHIFTIX1 LLC acquired roughly a 9.1% stake in Penguin Solutions (via convertible preferred shares) for $377 million in October.

What changes in practice?

For the AI hardware market, this signals that memory makers are positioning themselves not only as HBM suppliers but as strategic investors in the broader ecosystem. Profits from Solidigm’s traditional NAND business will be kept separate from returns generated by HYAICO’s AI investments.
