Sekiro: No Defeat is no longer just a film. The production committee and Famitsu confirmed that the original eight-episode plan premieres in January 2027, rebuilding the theatrical cut with extra episodes and scenes that did not fit in cinemas.
What happened?
The movie Sekiro: No Defeat opened in Japan on September 4, 2026 for a three-week limited run. Demand added extra screenings from October 2. The team now states clearly that the film was always an advance cut of an eight-chapter TV series.
ARCH, speaking for the committee, said staff wanted audiences to feel the picture and sound on a big screen first. The series follows the same Wolf and Kuro arc, then adds new episodes and cuts missing from the theatrical edit.
Crunchyroll will stream the eight weekly episodes from January 2027 outside Japan, China, Korea, Russia and Belarus.
Why it matters
Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice from FromSoftware has sold more than 10 million copies. The anime is fully hand-drawn 2D, directed by Kenichi Kutsuna at Qzil.la. The committee said no generative AI is used in the animation.
The cast includes Daisuke Namikawa as Wolf, Miyuki Satou as Kuro and Kenjiro Tsuda as Genichiro Ashina. For fans, Sekiro: No Defeat is the first long-form animated take on the FromSoftware title.
What changes in practice
