Seedance: ByteDance offers up to 1 million yuan for AI-generated films

Volcengine, ByteDance’s cloud unit, announced a Seedance partnership plan for professional film and TV at the 10th Pingyao International Film Festival. According to IT Home, the package includes token subsidies, marketing support and tools; incentives can reach 1 million yuan per project.

What happened?

Presented on September 27 at the festival, the program accepts features, series, animation and authored shorts. Studios, festivals, directors and platforms can apply. Two paths exist: a film generated entirely in Seedance, or a mix of live action and AI shots.

Finished films are out — only works in pre-production or production qualify. All video generation in the picture must run 100% on Seedance. Volcengine says it will favor projects that fuse AI with a traditional film pipeline in a new way, not just promo clips.

Seedance 2.5, released in China in July, outputs up to 30 native seconds per pass (double 2.0) and can extend clips across rounds. Audio and video are generated together. ByteDance already partnered with Hong Kong’s TVB in June to trial 2.0 on shorts and cloud infrastructure.

Why it matters

Frontier labs are fighting over long-form video. Instead of only selling an API, ByteDance is paying productions to be born inside its own model — and requiring exclusivity at generation time. It is an ecosystem bet: a traditional Chinese festival, subsidized tokens and a 100% Seedance clause.

What changes in practice

Anyone chasing the million-yuan cap has to design the film around Seedance from the storyboard, not bolt the tool on at the end. The 30-second cap still means stitching scenes. Volcengine did not publish a public form or selection calendar in this announcement; the official channel is its own cloud site.
