Samsung's foundry raised the yield of its 2nm SF2 process to nearly 60%, ChosunBiz reported citing industry sources. The figure moved from the 30% range in mid last year to above 50% in January and about 55% in August.
What changed
With yield more stable, Samsung shifts engineering to performance per watt and thermal management in talks with potential customers. It is preparing the second-generation node SF2P, targeting production this year: +12% performance, −25% power and −8% area versus SF2, according to the same reports.
The commercial plan uses next year's 2nm volume for Tesla as a springboard toward big-tech orders. At an investor event, the foundry said its customer base could grow about fourfold by 2029 versus 2017.
Context
SF2 is Samsung's first production 2nm node on GAA. Even with the yield jump, the market-share gap versus TSMC remains large. Yield figures are not official Samsung numbers; they are market estimates published by Korean press.
