Resident Evil Outbreak Night opens in mainland Chinese theaters on October 5, 2026, nine years after Resident Evil: The Final Chapter (2017). The local title is 生化危机:爆发夜. According to IT Home and Maoyan and Dengta Professional data cited by GamerSky, presales and advance screenings had already passed 20 million yuan by about 6 p.m. on October 4, with roughly 438,000 tickets sold or reserved.
What happened?
The mainland release plays in CINITY, IMAX, China Giant Screen, 4DX and ScreenX. The local rating asks caution for minors. The film had already opened abroad between September 16 and 18. GamerSky, citing public figures through September 23, reported more than US$113 million worldwide, a 7.7 on IMDb and 95% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes. Dread Central estimated about US$196 million globally on September 27, before China and Japan. Those international totals are from September and do not include the October 5 China opening.
The worldwide opening, still without China and Japan, was reported at about US$108.3 million, with US$60 million in North America, according to GameSpot on September 21. That is the franchise's best cinema start, above the US$26.6 million of Resident Evil: Afterlife in 2010. Early coverage cited 96% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes; GamerSky later used 95%. Metacritic sat around 80 in the first counts.
What the film is
Zach Cregger, of Weapons and Barbarian, directs, with a script co-written with Shay Hatten. The lead cast includes Austin Abrams, Paul Walter Hauser, Zach Cherry and Kali Reis. Constantin Film produced it with PlayStation Productions, and Sony handles international distribution. The Chinese cut is reported at about 93 minutes, one minute shorter than the North American version, according to DCP details in the local press.
The story does not recreate a specific game. Brian, a medical courier sent to Raccoon City, is caught in an outbreak set in the world of the 1996 Resident Evil. Cregger told the BBC the film is an independent story inside that universe, not an adaptation of an existing plot. The absence of Leon and other classic faces has split players since the announcement. English-language coverage often calls the reboot simply Resident Evil, without the Outbreak Night subtitle used for the Chinese release.
Why it matters
China was decisive for the 2016 film: The Final Chapter earned about US$159.5 million there alone, according to Box Office Mojo figures cited by Dread Central. Japan opens on October 9. Together, those two markets explain much of the franchise's historical cinema ceiling. Presales above 20 million yuan show demand, but they do not yet say what the wide release will gross.
For anyone following Capcom, the timing sits next to another studio move: the REX project for the RE Engine, described as a layer that generates code with AI. Cinema and internal tools are separate fronts, but both put the Resident Evil IP on the industry map in the same week.
