Krafton has cancelled PUBG Black Budget, the extraction shooter spun off from PUBG: Battlegrounds. In a note on the game's Steam page, the publisher said the project's current direction would not allow it to deliver an experience players could enjoy over the long term.
What happened?
The PUBG Black Budget announcement came in a Steam development update, reported by outlets including Rock Paper Shotgun, Eurogamer and GameSpot. The official text says that, after reviewing the project's status and future direction, the team concluded the current path would not sustain a lasting experience. Krafton therefore decided to end development.
The publisher thanked everyone who joined the closed alpha tests and said PUBG Studios will carry what it learned into future projects, while continuing to listen to players. There is no release date left to miss: PUBG Black Budget never had a public launch window.
What was the game?
Revealed in November 2025, PUBG Black Budget was pitched as a tactical extraction shooter. Mercenaries tried to recover secret technology from an abandoned research facility on an island trapped in a time loop. The supernatural threat, called the Anomaly, appeared as purple clouds. The design mixed extraction with battle royale ideas, the genre that made Battlegrounds.
According to Eurogamer, the project already appeared in a Krafton financial report in 2023, when the company was aiming for a second-half 2024 release. The public reveal only arrived in late 2025, followed by closed alphas.
Why it matters
PUBG Black Budget is the second PUBG spin-off shut down in 2026. In March, the tactical shooter PUBG: Blindspot went offline about two months after entering early access. At the time, ARC Team said it could no longer sustainably deliver the experience it had set out to provide.
Extraction remains a crowded niche dominated by a few large games. Krafton did not name the team's next project and did not discuss refunds, because PUBG Black Budget was never sold publicly. The message is that the publisher preferred to cut the game before a launch that, in its internal view, would not hold players.
What changes in practice?
- There will be no launch of PUBG Black Budget.
- Closed-alpha participants will not see the test continue.
- PUBG: Battlegrounds remains the main game under the brand.
- Krafton says the lessons will feed future projects, without naming any.
