PS5SX2 PS2 discs: PS5 jailbreak now runs physical media

The homebrew project PS5SX2 PS2 discs has just advanced: it is now possible to run physical PlayStation 2 discs on a jailbroken PS5. Developer Sword demonstrated the feature, crediting Al Azif for the optical drive support.

What happened?

PS5SX2 is a native port of the PCSX2 emulator for jailbroken PS5. It uses CPU recompilers and a modified Vulkan driver for the console's GPU, allowing resolution up to 6x (or 8x on Pro) and features like frame generation, 60 FPS patches and HD textures.

The novelty is physical disc support: after an initial game dump (via payload), the disc can be inserted and the game launched. It also works with external USB DVD drives, useful for Digital PS5s or internal drives with issues. The feature is in beta in version 2.01 of the project.

Why is this important?

Sony never offered native compatibility with PS2 discs on the PS5 (only PS4 and digital Classics catalog). The homebrew fills this gap for owners of jailbroken consoles, allowing use of the original physical collection.

The project already tests dozens of games and adds features like multi-disc, cheats and online for some titles. It is a significant advance in the PS5 emulation and homebrew scene.

What changes in practice?

Those with a jailbroken PS5 (compatible firmwares, typically below certain versions) can now rescue their PS2 disc library. Own BIOS and games are required. The process involves payload and dump, so it is not fully plug and play yet, but the beta auto-play gets closer to that.
