The PlayStation 5 Slim has had another internal revision, and the model number does not give it away. Technician Modyfikator89 opened a Marvel's Wolverine Limited Edition and found the EDM-051 motherboard in a console still identified as CFI-2116. The report, posted on X on September 30 and picked up this weekend by VideoCardz and Digital Trends, did not come with a Sony statement.
What the teardown shows
The easiest change to spot is the CR2032 CMOS battery, the coin cell that keeps the internal clock. On the EDM-051 it has been moved to a spot where replacement needs less disassembly. On earlier Slim revisions, reaching that cell meant working closer to the board and the liquid-metal system. The PS5 Pro already uses a similar, more serviceable layout.
Without the cell, the console loses the time whenever it is offline. That can interfere with digital license checks and saved games. A common CR2032 costs very little; the problem, until now, was the path to it.
Cooling, and what is still unknown
The heatsink also changed, and the liquid-metal area around the APU is smaller, closer to the PS5 Pro design. Technicians read that as less surface in contact with the compound, which should lower leak risk in normal use or vibration. The HDMI retimer was also swapped for a version described as newer and cheaper.
There are, so far, no comparative measurements of temperature, noise or performance. The manual shipped with the console, according to VideoCardz, still describes the older hardware and does not mention the easier battery swap. An older CFI-2116 therefore does not guarantee the new board: that model code was already used on earlier revisions.
Why it matters
Silent revisions are common in consoles. The difference here is practical: the clock battery often fails years after purchase, and PS5 liquid metal has already been a delicate repair topic. If the EDM-051 really simplifies the swap and contains the compound better, the Slim becomes easier to maintain. That remains a teardown reading, not an official spec.
