Project Suncatcher leaves the ground: on October 1, 2026 the MVP prototype rides SpaceX’s Transporter-18 with four Trillium TPUs and roughly 1 kW of solar arrays.
What Project Suncatcher is
Google’s long-term bet is whether AI data centers can live in low Earth orbit, where panels see near-constant sunlight — the company cites up to eight times more energy than on the ground. The fridge-sized craft was built with Planet Labs on an existing bus.
What the test measures
This is not a training cluster. The four TPUs should answer simple Gemini queries in bursts of about 15 minutes because cooling cannot hold a continuous load. Google wants launch vibration, radiation and thermal data. Ground tests suggested Trillium TPUs can survive a five-year ionizing dose.
