Microsoft Xbox ads patent: ads after bosses for playtime credits

The Microsoft Xbox ads patent describes a system that pauses Xbox and PC games after a boss, a quest or a cutscene to show an ad, then grants a playtime credit. Application US 2026/0260258 A1 was filed in April 2026 and published on September 3. It is not an announced product.

What happened?

The system listens for engine signals and then suspends the session at OS level. Players start with 15, 30 or 60 minutes ad-free. Eurogamer, Dexerto and Inven covered the filing this week.

Why it matters

The model copies mobile rewarded ads. The patent does not force Xbox to ship the feature.

What changes in practice

Nothing changes on today's console. If it becomes a product, the likeliest fit is free-to-play or an ad-supported Game Pass tier.
