OpenAI plans to buy artificial intelligence chips from Google, according to reports from The Information and Bloomberg published on October 27 and 28, 2026. The outlets cited people familiar with the matter. Financial terms and deal details have not yet been confirmed, and both OpenAI and Google declined to comment.
The news represents a step in OpenAI's diversification. The company is one of Nvidia's largest GPU customers. It has been renting TPUs (Tensor Processing Units) from Google Cloud since 2025 and has posted job openings for engineers specializing in optimizing its frontier models on Google's processors.
Diversification context
Google's TPUs are gaining ground as an alternative to Nvidia GPUs in the AI chip market. Google began selling the chips directly to some customers this year. Oracle also recently announced it will offer TPUs on its cloud starting in 2027.
OpenAI is also developing its own chips, called Jalapeño, in partnership with Broadcom. The search for multiple sources of compute comes as Big Tech companies invest hundreds of billions of dollars in AI infrastructure.
So far, there is no official confirmation that a purchase agreement has been signed. The reports describe plans under discussion.
