Octopath Traveler Switch 2: both HD-2D RPGs arrive with higher resolution and frame rates

Square Enix confirmed in an October 1, 2026 statement that Octopath Traveler and Octopath Traveler II are now available on Nintendo Switch 2. The versions bring resolution and frame rates optimized for Nintendo's newer console, keeping the HD-2D look that mixes pixel-art characters with 3D scenery.

The announcement comes from Square Enix's Los Angeles office and treats the launch as complete, not as a forecast. The publisher also posted a Switch 2 launch trailer.

What changes on Switch 2

The two games can be bought separately. Nintendo also lists a digital bundle with both titles. On the official store page, the Switch 2 edition is exclusive to that hardware: it does not run on the original Switch, and saves are not compatible between versions.

The statement does not mention a free upgrade path for people who already own the games on Switch. Anyone who wants the optimized version needs to buy the Switch 2 edition.

Octopath Traveler is set in Orsterra, with eight travelers and independent stories. Octopath Traveler II moves to Solistia, with a different cast and an industrial-era backdrop. Both use turn-based combat.

Why it matters

Square Enix says the series, since its 2018 Switch debut, has shipped and sold more than 7 million copies worldwide. HD-2D stopped being a Team Asano experiment and became a visual signature for the publisher, later repeated in other RPGs.

Switch 2 gains, on the same day, two JRPGs already known on other platforms, with no new content announced beyond the optimization. The value of the version is playing handheld with image and fluidity tuned to the new hardware.

GOG on October 8

The same statement sets the debut of both games on the GOG store for October 8. From 12 a.m. PT that day until midnight on October 18, Octopath Traveler is 70% off and Octopath Traveler II is 60% off.

The titles already existed on Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series, and PC. What is new at this stage is Switch 2 now and GOG next week.
