NVSmooth30: modders enable NVIDIA Smooth Motion on RTX 30 GPUs

An experimental project called NVSmooth30, created by developer Adeline, is enabling NVIDIA Smooth Motion on GeForce RTX 30 Ampere cards that officially do not support the feature.

What Smooth Motion is

Unlike DLSS Frame Generation, which needs in-game integration, Smooth Motion generates frames at the driver level. It inserts extra frames between rendered ones and, in theory, works in titles that never shipped the NVIDIA SDK.

NVIDIA reserved the feature for newer generations. NVSmooth30 tries to lift that lock on SM86 hardware.

How the mod works

According to the GitHub repo and Nexus Mods page, NVSmooth30 is a clean-room compatibility experiment. It does not redistribute NVIDIA binaries: it uses the NvPresent64.dll already installed with the driver, patches capability checks and retargets Ada Lovelace (SM89) kernels to Ampere (SM86).

Typical setup means dropping a version.dll next to the game executable and enabling Smooth Motion in NVIDIA Profile Inspector. After a driver update the toggle may need to be turned on again.

Community reports

The project was first shown on an RTX 3050 Laptop. Forum and Wccftech reports also mention RTX 3070 and RTX 3080. In Kingdom Come: Deliverance II, an RTX 3080 user described about 130 displayed FPS up from 65 FPS without frame generation.

A second parallel path, dlssg_for_sm86-MFG-version, also tries to bring Smooth Motion and Vulkan to RTX 30 cards.

Limits

This is alpha software. Compatibility is not guaranteed. Artifacts, crashes and anti-cheat conflicts are possible. It is not official NVIDIA software. Sources: Wccftech, VideoCardz, GitHub NVSmooth30.
