Semiconductor giant Nvidia is in early talks to acquire or significantly expand its stake in Reflection AI, an American artificial intelligence startup specializing in open-weight foundation models, according to the Financial Times and Quartz. The startup was recently valued at around $25 billion.
From Chipmaker to Foundation Model Owner
Co-founded in 2024 by former DeepMind researchers Misha Laskin and Ioannis Antonoglou, Reflection AI builds autonomous coding agents and recently launched its flagship open-weight model, Beam, aimed at rivaling cost-effective open models from China such as DeepSeek and Kimi.
Nvidia has already injected approximately $800 million into Reflection AI across prior funding rounds. Moving to absorb the startup or take a controlling stake signals Jensen Huang's strategy to dominate not just the hardware layer, but the entire open-weight software and model architecture running on Nvidia GPUs.
Regulatory Scrutiny and the Acqui-Hire Alternative
Discussions remain at an early stage, and the companies are exploring multiple transaction structures. One prominent option is an "acqui-hire" agreement combined with technology licensing, a format increasingly used by tech giants to bring top AI talent in-house while minimizing antitrust reviews from US and European regulators.
Reflection AI has also secured major compute agreements with infrastructure providers including Nebius and SpaceX to fuel the training of next-generation models.
